Spring Gardening Tips
Getting your garden ready for the upcoming season couldn’t be more exciting for experienced and new gardeners. Here are some tips to get you started:
1. Clean out your garden
Get rid of weed and roots to prevent them growing back.
2. Sharpen your tools
Do this at the start of the season so that you can be productive in other areas later on.
3. Order new tools
If you’re missing tools or need to replace your tools, order some new ones ahead.
4. Replenish your soil with fertilizer
Since your soil would’ve dried out a bit over the winter, add compost or manure to give it more moisture and nutrients.
5. Check the acidity level of your soil
Get a pH soil test kit and sample your soils across different planting areas. Add dolomitic lime to increase the pH level or elemental sulfur to decrease it.
6. Trim old trees, shrubs, and plants
In mid to late spring, you can start pruning your old plants so that they can have new growth. Summer plants can be trimmed early spring. Remove any dead, damaged or diseased branches.
Mulch can help prevent weeds and diseases, and regulate moisture and temperature of your soil. Add about three inches thick of mulch to your garden but leave a few inches away from the root of your plants so they don’t rot.
